  1. Heartfelt condolences to Pauline, Jennifer and the Howe extended family. Congratulations on a lovely service that brought back great memories of John. I first met John early in the 1970s when he was in the Physics Division of the then Defence Standards Laboratories, Maribyrnong. Later in the 1970s, I became part of the Laboratories Explosives Instrumentation Group that he headed. John was a wonderful gentleman whom I greatly respected and admired; he was a great mentor and role model. As reflected on during the service, he was a caring and loving family man. That caring nature was very much evident in his work role as a team leader. My wife Kathleen and I greatly appreciated the hospitality of John and Pauline on the occasions we stayed at their Mount Beauty holiday house (ca.1980) and at their Newlands Arm house in 2010. At Newlands Arm, I was privileged to sail in his beloved Couta boat and to fish with him from his tinnie in the mouth of the Mitchell River. We also fondly remember the Christmas parties at John and Pauline’s house at Strathmore. His was a life well lived and it was an honour to have known him. A workmate and friend, now at rest.
